Old Dominion 31, Norfolk State 10: the derby wasn't close

Wednesday we wrote that Old Dominion should be favored but that the derby "has a habit of being a field-goal game," and that a new quarterback running a new coordinator's offense with ten new starters was a lot of first-time things at once.

Henicle answered his own question in one night
Quinn Henicle, named the starter five days before kickoff, threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more in his first regular-season start. Whatever rust the opener script promised never showed up. The promoted coordinator's offense didn't look like a debut, and the lone returning starter narrative — which we leaned on hard — mattered a lot less than the level of athlete stepping into those vacancies. That's the part of our preview that deserves the red pen: FBS programs don't rebuild the way FCS rosters do. They restock.
The turnovers were the game
Norfolk State never led, and the margin has a simple explanation: three Spartan turnovers, two of which Old Dominion turned directly into touchdowns. That's 14 of the 31 points handed over. The zeros that traveled from the Winston-Salem State game — the defense showed up in stretches — couldn't survive the offense giving the ball to a team that punishes it.
This is what the 56-0 couldn't simulate, and to Norfolk State's credit, nobody in that building thought it could. An FBS front on a Saturday night is a different math problem, and the Spartans didn't have an answer for it in week one of trying.
Where this leaves year two
One honest reframe before anyone spirals: Norfolk State lost the derby by three touchdowns to a ten-win FBS program, on the road, in the series where they've still never won. That's the expected outcome — it's the outcome our preview called, minus the "closer" part. The season Norfolk State is actually building toward is the MEAC schedule, and nothing about Saturday touches that.
The immediate problem is that the schedule doesn't let up: Friday night the Spartans are at Virginia — an ACC team that just beat NC State 34-8 in its opener. Fresh preview of that one lands before kickoff, and it will be appropriately humble about labels.
