Six teams on this beat played this week, and one of them won. Delaware State's 36-33 win over Norfolk State in Philadelphia has its own piece. Virginia Tech was off. Here are the other four.
Wake Forest 51, Virginia 7
Wake Forest led 44-0 before Virginia scored, on a 47-yard Beau Pribula pass to Da'Shawn Martin with 50 seconds left in the third quarter.
The preview asked whether Virginia could run it again after 195 yards against Duke. They ran 19 times for 16 yards. Wake Forest ran for 309 and gained 538, and Ty Clark III scored three rushing touchdowns.
Virginia went 3 for 7 on fourth down and 1 for 12 on third. Eli Holstein also played and went 12 of 16 for 102.
We picked Wake Forest. Virginia is 4-5 and 2-4 in the ACC, and 0-4 away from Scott Stadium. They are off next week and host Cal on November 14.
Marshall 36, Old Dominion 23
Marshall led 14-0 after TJ Lester touchdown runs of 4 and 49 yards in the first quarter.
The biggest swing came on the last snap of the first half. Old Dominion lined up for a field goal, Marshall blocked it, and Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw returned it 100 yards. A made kick would have cut it to 20-13. Instead it was 27-10.
Brandon Crutchfield returned an interception 44 yards for an Old Dominion touchdown early in the third quarter. Old Dominion did not get closer than ten after that. Jorge Diaz Nicolas kicked five field goals for Marshall.
Jaxon Potter made his second start and threw for 329 yards with three interceptions. Marshall played all three of their quarterbacks, as Tony Gibson had said they would. They threw 18 passes between them. Marshall ran 54 times for 196 yards and held the ball for 35:12.
The announced homecoming crowd was 17,093, the lowest of the season at S.B. Ballard Stadium. Each of Old Dominion's five home games has drawn fewer people than the one before it.
We picked Marshall. Old Dominion is 2-7 and 1-5 in the Sun Belt, and they play at Coastal Carolina next.
Colgate 37, William & Mary 0
William & Mary gained 142 yards and had seven first downs. Colgate held the ball for 38:55.
Jake Stearney threw three touchdown passes, two of them to Peyton Way, who caught 10 passes for 141 yards.
A week after rushing for their best total of the season against Georgetown, William & Mary ran 26 times for 72. The Tribe are 3-6 and 1-5 in the Patriot League. Lafayette comes to Zable on Saturday.
Towson 44, Hampton 13
Towson gained 591 yards, 334 of them on the ground. Kemarrion Battles went 91 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Hampton's first touchdown came from a receiver. Sejhe Jackson threw 72 yards to Isaiah Smith late in the first half. Xavier Brookins added a 25-yard touchdown pass to Damon Short in the third quarter.
Hampton is 1-8. They play at Elon on Saturday.
