A week ago six programs on this beat played and five won. This week four played and one did.

Delaware State, Norfolk State and William & Mary were off. Virginia Tech and Old Dominion have their own pieces today. Here are the other two.

Sacred Heart 35, Hampton 21

Hampton scored first, Tre'Von Taylor to Sejhe Jackson from a yard out late in the first quarter. Sacred Heart scored five of the next six touchdowns.

Poochie Snyder went 18 of 21 for 198 yards with a touchdown pass and ran for two more. Chuck Webb carried 21 times for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Sacred Heart outrushed Hampton 181 to 108.

Hampton used both quarterbacks again. Taylor was 7 of 9 for 123 and two touchdowns, the second a 38-yarder to Isaiah Smith. Xavier Brookins was 8 of 15 for 98 and ran 38 yards for the last Hampton score. Hampton went 3 for 4 on fourth down.

Hampton is 1-6. Their only win is the opener against Virginia-Lynchburg.

SMU 23, Virginia 13

Virginia tied it 10-10 on a 47-yard Will Bettridge field goal with 25 seconds left in the first half. SMU went back down the field and Brendan Baird kicked a 45-yarder on the last play of the half.

SMU led the rest of the way. Kevin Jennings threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns, the second a 37-yard throw to Jalen Hale early in the fourth quarter that made it 23-13. Kendrick Raphael ran 22 times for 124.

SMU outgained Virginia 404 to 258 and went 4 for 5 on fourth down. Beau Pribula was 13 of 22 for 137 with no touchdown passes, and scored Virginia's only touchdown on a one-yard run.

Virginia is 4-3, and 4-0 at Scott Stadium. The third loss was to West Virginia in Charlotte. On the road they are 0-2, and they have scored 20 points in those two games: 38-7 at Florida State and 23-13 at SMU.

Virginia Tech and Old Dominion

Virginia Tech beat Georgia Tech 34-24 at homecoming and led from the opening drive. We were in the press box, and the full piece has James Franklin on the five sacks and the young offensive line.

Old Dominion lost 23-15 to Georgia Southern on Thursday night, after Max Johnson left in the first half with a shoulder injury and his backup completed 23 of 30.
