Two new arrivals, one conference game: William & Mary opens at Villanova

The Patriot League got to ten football programs by shopping the CAA's top shelf. Richmond came over in 2025. William & Mary and Villanova followed this year.

And on Friday night, two of the three open against each other — their first conference game as members.

This is a bad draw

Welcome to the Patriot League — your first opponent is the team picked to win it.

Villanova went 12-3 last year and made the FCS semifinals, where Illinois State ended their season 30-14 in December. Mark Ferrante's in year ten. Junior running back Ja'briel Mace could've left. He didn't — he's back, and he shows up on the Walter Payton Award preseason watch list and the league's preseason all-conference team.

The league's own poll has Villanova picked ahead of Lehigh — and Lehigh has won this thing two years running.

Mike London's Tribe went 7-5 last season, 6-2 in the CAA, tied for third. That's a solid team. It is not, on last year's evidence, a semifinalist.

What William & Mary has to sort out

Quarterback — and it's genuinely open. Winston Watkins, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound transfer from Towson, brings the kind of size and dual-threat ability that changes what the offense can even call. Does he have the job? The program hasn't said.

Camp opened July 29 at the Montgomery Football Practice Facility. Whatever got decided there shows up on the first series Friday night.

The part that gets missed

It's easy to treat realignment as paperwork — the letterhead changes, nothing real moves. Friday is the argument against that.

These two spent nearly two decades in the same league. They know each other's personnel and tendencies from years of CAA play. Now they meet on opening night with the result counting in a standings table neither has ever appeared in. The familiarity is real. The context is brand new.

Athletic director Brian Mann didn't dress up why William & Mary moved: Richmond, and keeping the Capital Cup as a conference game. That rivalry closes the season on November 21. This is where it starts.

What to watch

Can the Tribe's front hold up against a semifinal-caliber team, on the road, at night, in week one? Does the quarterback question look settled or still live? And check the scoreboard in the fourth quarter — a competitive loss at Villanova and a blowout are two very different pieces of information about a season that runs another eleven games.
